DOUBLE VISION
The Reality Camera System is the reason why robots5 appear to fall into your lap during SK3D. The camera has two lenses side by side instead of one lens like a regular video camera. The lenses follow the actors and adjust as they move closer to and farther away from the action.
“We're mimicking6 human eyesight,” says SK3D's photography director, Vince Pace, who helped invent the camera. “Your eyeballs turn in toward your nose to look at close-up objects but stay parallel7 to see things far away. The camera does the same thing.”
Just as each of your eyes sends separate information to the two sides of your brain, each camera lens sends different information to two minicomputers inside the camera. It's almost like the camera is “seeing” the way a human would!

 RED SIGHT and BLUE
But you need those funny-looking glasses to feel as if the motorbikes in SK3D are crashing toward you. Here's why.
After the left and right images are captured, they're colored. The images taken with the camera's left lens are tinted8 red; the images from the right lens are tinted blue.
That's where the glasses come in. The red plastic over your left eye allows that eye to see only the left lens' images when they're projected on the movie screen. The blue plastic over your right eye allows that eye to see only the right lens' images.
Then your brain combines9 the two separate images into one. The result? You're seeing what the camera saw: a 3-D image. 3D WORKOUT
Working with the Reality Camera System takes extra effort from the director and actors.
“When you look at the camera, you can't look at just one lens,” says Daryl Sabara, who plays Juni. “You have to look dead straight in the middle. Otherwise your eyes will look crossed on-screen.”
And a chair placed too close to the camera, for instance10, could look like it's popping out at you, taking attention away from the action.
"You constantly11 rethink how you'll do a shot," says director Robert Rodriguez. “A 3D movie is a complete world. It's not just a flat image in front of you.”
There's nothing like the spiky12 end of a fighting stick coming right at your head to convince you of that!
The actors were usually shot against a green screen, with background and special effects created on a computer and added later. For instance, the floating robot Orbit is totally digital; Daryl Sabara, who plays Juni, had to pretend the robot was there while shooting their scene.

3D History
A hundred years ago, the first three-dimensional movie showed a locomotive13 seeming to steam straight out of the screen. Some watchers ran from the theater in fear of being crushed14! Over the years, 3D came and went but never caught on15 big. Cameras were heavy and bulky16. Picture quality was poor. And nobody liked wearing the funny glasses. Today's 3D uses lightweight video camcorders17. Digital pictures are tops. You still need glasses—but experts are working on that, too. A new wave of 3D movies using the new digital technology is headed for theaters. And someday, 3D might even come to TV.
