Tim Duncan: Humble but Wonderful|

A Moment to Be Remembered
On June 15 (American local time), in Game 6 of NBA Finals 2003, the San Antonio Spurs won an 88-77 victory over the New Jersey Nets. Tim Duncan put on one of the greatest performances in NBA Finals history; his performance in Game 6 perfectly illustrated1 his value to the Spurs. Duncan, the regular season and Finals MVP2, finished two blocks shy of3 a quadruple-double4 as he led San Antonio to its second championship in the past five years.
You want scoring? Duncan had 21 points, including seven in a surge5 at the end of the first half that prevented the Nets from running away6 early.
You want rebounding? Duncan had 20, his fourth 20-rebound game of the postseason7. In the fourth quarter, he seemed to sweep away8 every miss9 by the Nets.
You want passing? Duncan had 10 assists10, three more than Nets passmaster Jason Kidd as he completed a triple-double. Amid a crowd of defenders in the final period, he repeatedly found open11 team mates for baskets that built a 19-0 run12.
You want defense? Duncan had eight blocks13, tying a Finals record. He also had a lot to do with Kenyon Martin's14 poor shooting and New Jersey's scoring drought15 of more than 5 1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter.
Typical of16 the humble17, modest Duncan, he did not even know he was approaching a quadruple-double, which has been done just four times in history.
“I'm sure that he did not know anything what his stats18 were,” said San Antonio's Gregg Popovich19, who became the 12th coach to win two NBA titles. “He just knows what's going on in the game and what needs to be done.”
For the final games, Duncan averaged 24.2 points, 17.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and a record 5.3 blocks. For the second time in five seasons, he carried the Spurs to the championship and won NBA Finals MVP honors.
“I think he proved that tonight,” said Nets coach Byron Scott, who lost in the Finals for the second straight20 year.

Biography
Duncan graduated with a degree in psychology from Wake Forest University. He didn't play in a basketball league until the 9th grade. He was a swimmer during his youth and at one point was a top U.S. competitor in his age group in the 400 freestyle. He is known for wearing his practice shorts backwards, a fashion he started while at Wake Forest University.
He has two sisters, Cheryl and Tricia. Tricia was a member of the Virgin Islands swim team in the 1988 Olympics. He has a large knife collection which includes a three-foot samurai21 sword. He admits to being afraid of heights and sharks. His favorite movie is The Crow. He is a video game lover.
Duncan and wife, Amy, were married in the summer of 2001. They created the Tim Duncan Foundation in November of 2001, which is set up to serve “the areas of health awareness22 and research, education and youth sports and recreation23”.
In 1997, Tim was selected as the first pick in the NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs and exceeded24 all expectations in his rookie25 season, ranking among the league leaders in scoring, rebounding, shot blocking and field goal percentage26. He led the NBA with 57 double doubles, swept Rookie of the Month honors for all six months of the season and was selected as Rookie of the Year by getting 113 of 116 votes. Tim further distinguished27 himself as the only rookie selected for the 1998 all-star game.
Duncan was named Most Valuable Player in 2001-02 season. He is just the second player (after David Robinson) in NBA history to be named to both an All-NBA Team and an All-Defensive Team in each of his first five seasons.    He was named the 1999 Finals MVP and co-MVP of the 2000 All-Star Game. He has been named an All-Star four straight seasons (no game was held in 1999). He leads all players in the NBA in double-doubles over the last five seasons.

About the 2001-2002 MVP Award (abridged)
As for the MVP award...what can I say? It is an amazing28 honor. I owe29 the team and my coaches a lot of thanks for their help in helping me reach another important level in my game, and without them this would not have been possible for me. I am not kidding30 when I tell you that I did not expect such a great honor. When I was growing up, learning this game back home, I could never have imagined that I could ever get to this level, much less that I would be voted in as the league's most valuable player, and especially twice in a row31. Thank you to all of you who supported and continue to support me and my team. I could not have done it without you.
