One of the biggest sports events in 2003 is probably Beckham's transfer to Real Madrid. On June 17, Manchester United confirmed they had agreed to sell football superstar David Beckham to Real Madrid 35 million euro ($40 million). The 28-year-old midfielder1, who is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, had been the subject of public talk again. Meanwhile Real Madrid caught the attention of the world again.
Real Madrid is no doubt the best known football club in the World. On December 11th 2000, at its annual2 awards ceremony3, FIFA4 presented Real Madrid with the “Club of the Century” award. The decision, voted by readers of FIFA Magazine, was overwhelmingly5 in favour of a club founded in 1902, leaving behind such historic greats6 as Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
Real Madrid is not the oldest football club in the World, not even in Spain (that privilege7 goes to Recreativo de Huelva8) and it hasn't got the largest stadium, or the biggest number of season ticket holders. But throughout the world, when the name Real Madrid is mentioned, no person who has ever heard of football can fail to have heard of them. Whether it's because of the likes of Di Stéfano9 and Puskas10, who played in Real's all-conquering team in the 1950s, or Butrague?觡o11, Míchel12 and Hugo Sánchez13 in the 1980s, or even some of today's stars, such as Raúl, Ronaldo, Figo, Zidane or Roberto Carlos, there is no doubting its unique14 and lasting impression on the world of football.
But it is not just players, both past and present, that make Real Madrid the great football club as it is. Unmatched success at home and abroad, and with it, an impressive house to display all its trophies15 are the hallmark16 of the club. Real Madrid has won more of Europe's premier club competition, the European Cup, than any other team. And in the league, nobody comes even close. Almost all of this success can be traced back to the vision17 of one man.
In 1943, Santiago Bernabéu18 became the tenth president of Real Madrid and kept that post until 1975. In that time, the club won 6 European Cups, 1 World Club Cup, 16 league titles and 6 Spanish Cups. His great ambition19 and vision makes Real Madrid stronger with the best players and coaches. Also he thought Real should have a big stadium that matches the big club. On December 14, 1947, the stadium after his name was founded. Now the stadium is one of the most famous in the world. It was Bernabéu's drive to make Real Madrid the best team in the World.
Real Madrid won the first five European Cups, adding a sixth in 1966. Drop a look at a special memorable player, Paco Gento, who was the only person ever to share all the 6 European Cups. In 1998, Real won its 7th European Cup in Amsterdam. It keeps Real on top in the world. Following up the European Cup success, Real Madrid won its second World Club Cup on December 1st 1998 in Tokyo, thus becoming World Club Champion.
For a time, Real Madrid was in a difficult situation. But people have never lost faith in it. On December 3, 2002, Real Madrid confirmed what everyone already knew—that Real Madrid is the best club in the world—by beating Olimpia of Paraguay 2-0 at International Stadium Yokohama.
Madrid, who won the World Club Cup for the third time in their history, could have scored more but for the excellent form of Paraguay national team keeper Ricardo Tavarelli.
