Palestinians rose up in arm after the election of Ariel Sharon as Israeli Prime Minister in March, angry at his severe policies against them. Tit-for-tat actions followed between radical Palestinian factions and the Israeli military forces. The latter even launched large-scale air attacks against Palestinian-ruled Gaza and the West Bank.
