In Scotland, when a couple gets married, the bride1 comes to the bridegroom's2 home on the wedding day. She throws a piece of wedding cake into the air with all her strength. The higher she throws it, the happier their life is expected to be. In some parts of Switzerland it is customary to invite a performer on stilt3 to the wedding, to wish the couple good luck. In Cameroon, the wedding tradition is that the bridegroom's father holds the bride and throws her into a pool of water to get rid of bad luck. In a village in Egypt, the bridegroom takes the bride in his arms, and they jump together into a big tub4 of water. They come out dripping5, and everyone shares their good wishes.
In Java, Indonesia, the bride brings a basin of clear water and washes the bridegroom's feet to express her devotion to him. In the Caucasus, the newlyweds, accompanied6 by a chief witness7, compete8 to climb a high mountain, when they reach the summit9, they are considered to be married. In Australia, Susakan newlyweds are bundled10 together in a bag made of snakeskin to spend the night. They are considered married when they emerge11 the next morning. In Afghanistan a mirror is placed before the bride and bridegroom. They meet in the mirror, then hold a big wedding feast12. In the South Pacific, wedding customs are rather simple. The couple comes to the home of the clan13 elder, who marries them by making their foreheads touch together.
