All motor vehicles in Great Britain must be registered, taxed and insured1, if you buy a new car, the dealer2 will usually arrange for the car to be registered for you． He will enter your name and address correctly and clearly on the registration application V55．
If you buy a used car3, you must complete the transfer of keepership into your name and address． You can do this by filling out the Registration Document ?穴V62?雪 and sending it to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency ?穴DVLA?雪．
You must pay the road tax． To do this, you have to complete an application form ?穴V10?雪 available in any post office． You also need the Registration Document, the certificate of insurance and, if the car is over 3 years old, a current test certificate of roadworthiness ?穴MOT?雪4． The MOT test is available at most garages． Then, you will obtain a tax disc, which must be displayed, in your car at all time．
The law in Great Britain requires all motorists to have valid insurance． Many insurance companies offer special policies for students． The 3 different types of insurance policies are:
Comprehensive ?穴the fullest cover?雪;
Third party, Fire and Theft; or
Third Party only ?穴the minimum cover?雪
You must find out whether or not you can use your existing license and for how long． You may be able to drive in Great Britain using your current license; or apply for a provisional license and take a driving test in order to obtain a full license．
If you are going to study in Great Britain for 12 months or less, and you have a full driving license from your own country or an international driving permit valid during your stay, you can drive any small vehicle for up to 12 months．
If you are going to study in Great Britain for more than 12 months, you may only drive on your valid foreign license or international driving permit for 12 months from the date of your first arrival． After the 12 months, you must obtain a provisional Great Britain driving license, which will allow you to apply for a driving test． You can apply for a provisional license on the D1 and D750 forms available from a post office once you have been resident in Great Britain for 6 months． Once you have a provisional license you will need to comply with conditions that apply to provisional license holders until you pass both the theory and practical parts of the driving test． The conditions are displaying L－plates7 and being supervised by a qualified driver sitting in the passenger seat． The qualified driver must be at least 21 years old and have held a full Great Britain license for 3 years． Once you have passed both parts of the test you can apply for your full license．
