Chapter 9
Julia and I were at school and it was break. Its high time that I should speak to Julia about the ‘secret’. I walked towards her desk, she didn't notice me, busy fiddling with her mobile.
小荷作文网 www.zww.cn “HUMMM” I cleared my throat. Julia nearly jumped up. She quickly hid the mobile and gave me a weak smile.
小 荷 作文网 www.zww.cn “Annie, you scared me to death!” She cried, her voice was going all funny. “Oh really?” I asked curiously. “If you weren’t hiding something from me you really wouldn't get so scared.” I said drily as if it was a joke but it really wasn’t.
“Oh no! I didn't try to hide anything from you. Why would I do that? You know we are best friends and I will never hide something from you.” Julia explained.
I didn't believe that, duh. I must have been dumb to believe that.
“Julia, my mum and I are going to watch my favorite movie tonight, I think you might wanna join us, do you?” I changed the subject, knowing that only by asking again and again won’t get any results.
This caught much of her attention.
“With your mum? You mean stepmother!” She corrected as if it was a big mistake.
“Oh but! Same thing! Big deal!” I couldn’t understand her. She narrowed her eyes, she seemed worried, very worried.
She didn't speak for a very long time. So long that I began to feel something was wrong.
“Julia, are you alright? Are you sure that you are not sick or anything today?” I had no idea what she was thinking.
“Annie, I am warning you, you can’t go to the movies!” She ejaculated.
The same kind of fear formed inside me. Julia is definitely hiding something from me. DEFINITELY!
“No, Julia. You have to explain to me about all this, you have to! Tell me, why are you and Mary acting so weird these days? Tell me, why are you sending messages on your mobile phone and not telling me what it’s for? Tell me, why don't you allow me to go to the movies with my mum? I won’t let you go home today if you don't tell me all this.” I was beginning to get angry.
“No, I can’t. It’s a secret and I shall keep it as one. All I can tell you is you can’t go to the movies today and you better keep away from your new stepmother!” Julia replied as if she really means it.
“Unless you tell me why, I will go to the movies with my mum.” I responded firmly.
She looked at me with sadness on her face, finally she opened her mouth to say something. “Fine, if you are so firm about going. I will be with you too. At least I can protect you.”
Protect me? From what? From my stepmother?
