Chapter 3
“Mary, are you ok?” I asked her uneasily. I could see the pain through her dark blue eyes. She looked as if she had seen a ghost.
小荷作文网 www.zww.cn“Errr… Me? I’m ok. Come on, let’s get you home.” She suggested as she opened the door to get out.
小 荷 作文网 www.zww.cn“Could you please tell me what’s wrong?” I asked the pale woman as we walked toward her car.
She opened the door to the car and offered me a seat. I sat there waiting anxiously for her answer. I had a big question mark inside my head. But Mary just drove on with out a word.
“What’s going on?” I asked her firmly.
She shook her head and chocked out the words. “Annie, I don't know how to tell you this, please ask your dad about it. Anyways, it’s about your family. I shouldn’t just poke my nose around other people’s businesses.” She replied, tossing her shiny blond hair back, her face was back to its normal color.
“Please tell me, if it’s about me.” I begged.
“No, Annie. It’s not about you, it’s about your mum- Cencila.” She prompted.
At the mention of my mum, I couldn’t help thinking about what the woman said on the phone. Maybe that was why Mary was acting all funny and weird because she might not want my mum to leave town.
“It’s about my mum getting a divorce and flying away right?” I questioned Mary even though I had no rights to do so.
“No of course not…. Err…actually… yes of course it is.” She said, her voice was going all funny and high-pitched.
“Are you sure?” I asked just to make sure because the way she said it was very weird.
“Yes, of course.” She said quickly, forcing a smile to her face. “David had found another girlfriend,” Mary said in a sarcastically way, she had the sour look on the face when she mentioned ‘David’.
“So that’s why David is divorcing Cencila. And she is now out of town, I am sorry Annie, you’ll never see her again.” she said sympathetically.
“Never?!” I bounced off my seat in the car. I couldn't hold the anger much longer, when I see this new stepmother I’ll make good sure that her head goes off first. But the car ceiling was so low that I hit my head hard on it. I sank back to my chair, face redden.
“Annie, you should try and wear the safety belt. If u had worn it, then u wouldn’t have pumped your head. If we had a car accident, you would die and I don't want another person to die today!” What another person? Did someone else die or something? I thought to myself.
“What do you mean another person?” I asked curiously, staring at Mary.
She opened her mouth but nothing came out. She didn't know what to say. Her face turned bright red, and she was trembling, “Errr….” She chocked out the word. “My… cousin died in a car accident today and that's one of the reasons why I was acting so weird.” She said vaguely.
“So it’s not because of my mum flying away?” I asked curiously.
“That’s also one of the reasons why.” She replied quietly. She stopped and parked the car in the parking lot right next to my house, she turned around and said, “We are there.”
“Thanks for the ride.” I said thankfully. I stepped out of the car and walked towards my house. I had a weird feeling inside me. How will the new stepmother be like? Is she going to be mean or is she going to be kind? No, she will be mean. Isn’t that how all stepmother are? I decided.
My heart was pounding so hard that I could hear it. I followed the steps up and rang the door bell gently.
“Coming.” I heard a voice and seconds after the door opened, a stranger stood in the door way.
“You must be Annie, the wonderful girl that David told me about.” She said cheerfully. “Come in, I’ve just made a cake for you.”
I couldn't believe it. Is this really my stepmother?
