—a response to whether abortion should be legal.
Should abortion be legal? That was a question raised in The secret lives of American teenagers. Amy is an average high school girl who accidentally got herself pregnant. She began to wear loose-bodied clothes to cover up her flabby tummy. And when she had outgrown those clothes, she had no choice but to confess to her parents. Stroked by the news, the mother was already planning for the baby’s future instead of panicking about her daughter’s ruined life.
It is precise about Amy’s life getting ruined. As a matter of fact, the teleplay somehow embellished the act of an adolescent getting pregnant. And a few options were offered: She could go away for sometime until the baby is born and put it up for adoption. That way she may come back to school the following year and back to her normal life. Or she could just give birth and get ready to be a happy housewife. But none of the options mentioned abortion.
The family did know a private clinic that can offer an abortion, illegally. But the mother disagreed about that. The reason was, ridiculous enough, that she didn’t want a new life being taken away, without its permission. I suppose such concepts are very well common in the US since they scarcely have enough population to operate the country. Manpower comes first, then human rights. All laws must have a reason to back them up, so does this one. And it is called: Thou shall not kill.
The definition of kill is: To take a life by force. And then may I ask, what’s a life? How’d you define it? The definition used to be: Things that are made of cells and it can grow and multiply and has its own metabolism. A cell is all that it takes huh? Then what about a virus? It ain’t no cell. It’s some genetic materials with a protein coat! So then, the experts explained: Well, when a virus is living inside a host, it shows some signs of life. And when it doesn’t, it’s dead. So may I assume that an embryo shows some signs of life in the womb but it’s dead when it’s out? Abortion isn’t killing, it’s just moving places! If I moved you somewhere else with food and air, you wouldn’t die would you? The only reason why an embryo died after being removed from the womb is, it’s hadn’t reached the standard of being a life.
Do vegetarians eat eggs? Yes! Oh don’t give me that crap about unfertilized eggs and stop being a hypocrite. Since when do people start caring about the unborn when all those people already born have their lives at risk? Although we shouldn’t weigh each life for its value, I still believe a 90 pound being weighs more than a fertilized egg. If the pregnant woman isn’t ready, then don’t force her give birth to an unwelcome life. The world has enough to worry about.
Another ridiculous argument points out that since killing is taking a life by force. Then you should ask for permission if you have to kill. And I’m picturing this as a woman staring at her B-ultrasonic screen and ask in a babyish voice: “Dear liwittle sweetwy, could u dwo momweey a fwavor? Plweese? Momweey’s gwonna kill u now. Love ya sweetwy. ” The thought of that irritates me. None of the mother who gave birth to a child ever asked for his/her permission, and even if they did, they couldn’t have gotten any reply. If taking a life is illegal, then what should we say about giving a life? So far I can’t decide which is worse for a child.
