The New 7 Wonders of the World|新世界七大奇迹

History
The “New 7 Wonders of the World” campaign was begun in 1999 by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. His Switzerland-based foundation, New7Wonders, received some 200 nominations from around the world and then narrowed the list to 21 candidates for the public to vote on2. Weber’s foundation aims to promote cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments.
Winners
Egypt believed its pyramids should not need to be voted on since they have always been listed as a world wonder. The New Seven Wonders group gave the pyramids an honorary position on the list. So there are actually now eight wonders of the world. Here are descriptions of them.
The Great Wall of China: The 4,160-mile barricade running from east to west is the world’s longest man-made structure. The fortification3 was built to protect various dynasties from invasion by many nomadic4 tribes.
Chichen Itza, Mexico: At the heart of Chichen Itza is a step pyramid at which the Mayans5 worshipped their gods. Shadows at the fall and spring equinoxes6 are said to look like a snake crawling down the steps, similar to the carved serpent at the top.
Christ Redeemer7, Brazil: The 125-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer with outstretched arms overlooks Rio de Janeiro from atop Mount Corcovado. The statue was built in pieces in France starting in 1926, and shipped to Brazil.
Machu Picchu, Peru: Built by the Incan8 Empire in the 15th century, Machu Picchu’s walls, palaces, temples and dwellings9 are perched in the clouds at 8,000 feet above sea level in the Andes overlooking a valley 310 miles from Lima10.
Petra, Jordan: This ancient city was the capital of the Arab kingdom of the Nabateans, a trade center. The city is famous for water tunnels and stone structures carved in the rock, including Ad-Dayr, “the Monastery11,” an uncompleted tomb facade12 that served as a church during Byzantine times.
The Roman Colosseum, Italy: The 50,000-seat arena13 was completed in A.D. 80. Thousands of gladiators14 dueled15 to the death here, and Christians were fed to the lions. The arena has influenced the design of modern stadiums.
The Taj Mahal, India: The white marble-domed mausoleum16 in Agra was built by a 17th century Mogul emperor for his favorite wife. The architecture combines Indian, Persian, and Islamic styles. The complex houses the graves of the emperor, his wife, and other royalty.
Pyramids of Giza, Egypt: The only surviving structures of the original seven wonders, the three pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs17  4,500 years ago. Nearby is the Great Sphinx statue, with a man’s face and a lion’s body.
Reaction
UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)
“The list of the 7 New Wonders of the World will be the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to18 the internet and not the entire world.”
Brazil
Newsweek reports the campaign was so pervasive19  that: One morning in June, Rio de Janeiro residents awoke to a beeping text message on their cell phones: “Press 4916 and vote for Christ. It’s free!”
Cambodia
Some Cambodians were crestfallen20 after their fabled Angkor Wat was not selected by the vote.
Chile
The Chilean representative for the Easter Island Moais, Alberto Hotus, said that Bernard Weber gave him a letter saying that the Moais had finished eighth and that they were “morally” one of the New Seven Wonders. Hotus said he was the only participant to receive such apology.
Jordan
Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan joined the campaign to back Petra, Jordan's national treasure. The campaign was so successful, despite Jordan only having a population of under 7 million people, over 14 million votes were made from the country.
